The Canton Area Food Pantry has completed its move to 12 E. Main Street on Monday, January 11, 2010. For some time, pantry volunteers have been looking for a larger place to store food and to serve people who need help feeding their families. The new location, which is housed in what used to be Davison’s Tax Office, is some three times larger than the previous space. “There is now enough space to store, display and assemble food packages” said one volunteer. The new location has other advantages as well. People using the pantry can now come inside to complete paperwork and ask questions instead of standing at the doorway as was the case in the old location. This is particularly important in the winter and when it rains.
Ronnie and Dana Vermilya worked very closely with pantry volunteers to make this move possible. They installed steel doors and deadbolts, built a partition, secured shelving and upgraded wiring to handle freezers. In addition, Tom Davison donated a very sturdy and useful counter. Also, Canton Building Supply donated eight pallets on which the pantry can keep food off the floor and make storage more economical. Many organizations and individuals offered to help with the move but, in the end, the pantry opted to have a company move the freezers and stock, taking less than three hours to complete.
The food pantry operates on an “appointment-only” basis. Individuals or families needing help can contact one of the volunteers at the following numbers: 673-7732 or 673-5850.
